Multiple Bell County crews battle brush fire off Stillhouse Hollow Lake

Posted:
BELL COUNTY - A brush fire scours a hillside near the Stillhouse Hollow Lake sending multiple Bell County crews to fight it.

It happened around 4:30 Thursday afternoon on the southwest side of the lake. Crews from Salado, Southwest Bell, Killeen and Harker Heights battled the fire. It started near the lake and then spread up the hillside.

Crews on the scene say it was tough to get trucks down the hill to fight the fire. Luckily, the wind changed, pushing the fire in on itself which helped firefighters to contain the blaze.

Fishermen nearby saw the whole hillside catch fire.

"The flames were so high that you couldn't see the trees in the background. So it got pretty high, a couple of us over here fishing thought well we might have to pack up and leave," Killeen resident James Madaris said.

Firefighters say the fire was basically out around 7:15. It's unclear how many acres it consumed and how it started. No homes were damaged.
