Runaway trailer causes fatal accident in Leon County

LEON COUNTY, TX (KXXV) - A 59-year-old Palestine woman was killed in Leon County Tuesday night when her vehicle was hit head-on by a runaway trailer.

The Department of Public Safety reports the accident happened about 8:05 p.m. on U.S. Highway 7, 4 miles east of Centerville. DPS says a 2001 Ford SUV was eastbound on Hwy 7, when a trailer being towed by a 2003 Chevy Silverado, that was westbound on the highway, became unhitched and hit the Ford SUV.

Kate WIlson, the driver of the Ford SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger in the SUV, 48-year-old Derek Lewis of Centerville, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan, and is listed in serious condition.

DPS says no one in the Silverado was injured.
