Killeen fire sends several to hospital after jumping out off second story

KILLEEN, TX (KXXV) - A firefighter and several residents were sent to the hospital after a fire forced them to jump from a second story apartment.

It happened in Killeen, at 3:40 a.m. Saturday morning, on Dunn Avenue and 2nd St. The fire completely engulfed an apartment complex, forcing several residents to jump from their second story windows.

Killeen Fire Chief Jerry Gardner says eight people were taken to the hospital with first and second degree burns, as well as injuries from jumping off the second floor. Gardner says a firefighter was also taken for evaluation and several residents were treated and released at the scene.

All people taken to the hospital are expected to recover. Gardner says the fire took over one building, causing major damage to four apartments. He says the source of the fire has been located, but the cause is still under investigation.
