AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry has tapped a Fort Worth deputy chief district attorney to head the state's embattled Office of Violent Sex Offender Management amid questions about who was running it.

Perry announced Friday that Elizabeth "Christy" Jack will become chairman of the agency's board. She has been on the board since 2011.

Jack replaces Dan Powers, who resigned this week after citing too heavy a workload for a volunteer position. Also, The Houston Chronicle reported Friday that two other top agency officials were on leave.

Executive director Allison Taylor will be out until next Thursday, while it's unclear when program manager Deborah Morgan will be back.

In a statement, Perry said that "much work needs to be done to restore public confidence in the agency."
