ROBINSON - Two Hewitt men are behind bars after their attempt to steal beer from a Robinson truck stop turned into more than they planned.

Nicholas Wade Hanford, 25, and Andrew Turner Hopkins, 26, both face charges of robbery and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

Police say the robbery occurred about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday night, at the Pilot Truck Stop on I-35 and Sun Valley in Robinson. There was a pickup in the drive-thru lane of the Wendy's at the truck stop. While the pickup was in the drive-thru, the passenger went inside the store, picked up a case of beer, and left without paying.

Another customer told the clerk, who then went outside to stop the man from stealing the beer. The clerk stood in front of the pickup in the drive-thru. Police say the driver tried to drive around her, but hit her anyways, then drove over a curb, which tore a wheel off the pickup.

He also hit an 18-wheeler, which caused damage to the pickup and the 18-wheeler. The man who stole the beer, tried to get back in the pickup, but was left behind. Other customers at the truck stop held him, using zip ties on the man's hands until police got there.

The driver of the pickup drove off on three wheels, and was found by police in a nearby subdivision. Police found a handgun while searching the pickup.
