University High School opens student run credit union

WACO - Students at University High School in Waco are receiving an opportunity of a lifetime. On Wednesday, a student run credit union opened on campus, allowing for students to manage their money within feet from their classrooms.

Mrs. Angela Reiher, the Dean of Academies says she's excited for the students.

She believes this on campus credit union will give students life skills early on, hopefully preventing major financial mistakes down the road.

It's a rare opportunity for the students. Not only will students be able to open their own checking and savings account at the Educators Credit Union Trojan Branch, but they are also the ones running the show."

“It is open to students, staff, and parents, and it’s completely student ran, “ says Reiher.

The students are tellers at the credit union, where they are learning to handle money and balance checkbooks.

“I like the experience, I get to handle money, and talk to different people everyday,” explains Junior Yanley Duarte. “I want it to help me get a job, like at Educators maybe in the future, because we are already basically an employee there."

The teens who work at the credit union are students of the Ron E. Smith Academy of Business and Finance.

During tax season, they volunteered to file taxes for more than 2,000 people, and returning millions of dollars in tax refunds.
