Testimony wraps up in first day of Petetan murder trial

MCLENNAN COUNTY - The first day of testimony is wrapping up Tuesday afternoon in the Carnell Petetan Jr. capital murder trial in McLennan County. Petetan is accused of murdering his estranged wife in front of her daughter.

The trial began at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday morning. Prosecutors said Petetan and his wife, Kim had a tumultuous relationship, that ended in tragedy at the hands of Petetan. But, the defense argues the state doesn't have physical evidence to prove that.

On Tuesday, attorneys went over what happened the day Kim was murdered. Prosecutors say Petetan showed up at Kim's Waco apartment with a gun, then forced her to pick up two of his friends and bring them back to her home. They say Kim and her 9-year-old daughter were held hostage, and when Kim tried to escape, Petetan shot and killed her.

Defense attorneys implied that it wasn't Petetan who fired the fatal shots, but one of his friends. Two police officers and two crime scene technicians working the case took the stand. One sergeant who interviewed witnesses, including Kim's daughter, says he has no reason to think anyone but Petetan killed Kim.

The trial became emotional as prosecutors showed graphic photos of Kim's dead body. Several of her family members left the room. Petetan sobbed loudly and wiped his eyes with tissues.
