Man arrested after standoff with police identified

WACO, TX (KXXV) - One man is in the McLennan County Jail after an hours long standoff with Waco police Sunday night.

Police say a neighbor went into the yard of the suspect’s property on the 2300 block of Sunnydell Avenue to retrieve a ball, when the unidentified man threatened the neighbor with a gun.

Police got the call just after 8 p.m. Sunday night. When they arrived, they tried to speak with him but he refused to talk to police, so a SWAT team was called to help. The suspect later asked to speak with a lawyer and Waco police officer Steve Anderson.

Negotiator Sgt. Patrick Swanton was called and after a few hours, police convinced the suspect to surrender about 10:30 p.m. He was immediately taken into custody. Police later recovered an unspecified long gun.

Fortunately, no one was injured in the standoff.

Niels Edward Olsen Jr. was arrested at the scene and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
