Local food pantries need more food for summer months

Posted:
WACO - It is a problem most local food pantries deal with this time of year, a limited supply of food to feed hungry children who can't get fed at home during the summer.

Many school districts in the area offer free meals to kids throughout the year, but the school year is coming to an end and the kids still need to be fed. That is why several local food pantries have come together to fight this hunger problem with their annual Spring Onto Summer Food Drive.

"Once kids get out of school we need a place for them to get food. The thing that happens is that we have about 12,000 children in schools right now that are on free or reduced lunches and another few weeks when they get out of school there are going to be about 10,000 of those kids looking for food."

Unlike other food drives, organizers say this one focuses primarily on the kids.

"This is a food drive that is focused particularly on the children and we have talked a lot in our promotions about getting kid-friendly types of food. Food that kids would enjoy."

Last year they collected more than 17,000 pounds worth of food and donations, but this year they definitely hope for more. Organizers say they hope they can collect anywhere from 25,000-30,000 pounds this year.

Food and monetary donations can be made at on Saturday April 12th between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at these participating locations:
Walmart, 1521 N IH-35, Bellmead
Walmart, 600 S. Hewitt Dr., Hewitt
Walmart, 4320 Franklin, Waco
Sam's Club, 2301 E. Waco Drive, Bellmead
Brookshire's Food Store, 100 Peplow St., Robinson
IGA Grocery Store, 125 Hewitt Drive, Hewitt
