UPDATE: Man shot by officer while wielding knives is charged

KILLEEN - A 35-year-old Army veteran who is in the hospital after being shot by Killeen police, now faces a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer after police say he charged officers while holding two knives.

Titus R. Latchison, of Killeen, has been charged with aggravated assault on a police officer after the case was reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney's Office.

Killeen police responded to a suicidal call in the 4600 block of Golden Gate Drive, on Friday, April 4th. Police say they tried calming Latchison down when they arrived, but he wasn't interested in talking. The officer fired at the Latchison, hitting him twice, once in the shoulder and in the stomach, after he charged the officers with two knives in his hands.

He was rushed to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. Latchison was originally taken to Darnall Army Medical Center, but was later airlifted to Scott & White Hospital in Temple.

After undergoing several surgeries, Latchison is still listed in critical condition and is at Scott & White Memorial Hospital.

Latchison’s family says Titus’ mental health may have played a role in the shooting. Though undiagnosed, they say he suffers from PTSD after serving three tours in Iraq. They say they had been encouraging him to seek help.

The officer who shot Latchison has completed his administrative leave and has been released to duty.
