Rabid skunk spurs caution in Bell County

KILLEEN, TX (KXXV) - Killeen animal control officers responded April 6 about a dog who had been scratched by a skunk in the 4500 block of Lonesome Dove.

The officers captured the skunk, which was then tested at the Texas Department of State Health Service in Austin. The Department of State Health Services notified the Killeen Animal Control Unit Tuesday, April 8, that the skunk had the rabies virus.

Animal control officers will be distributing handouts in the area to ensure residents are aware of the incident and are prepared for potential danger.

In a rabies notice, authorities are asking people to make sure their pets' rabies vaccinations are current. They also urge parents and pet owners to supervise their children and pets while they are outside, even if they are in a fenced area. Report any sick or injured animals or unusual animal activity to the Killeen Animal Control Unit at (254) 520-4455 during normal operating hours and at (254) 501-8800 after normal hours.
