Waco firefighters receive prestigious awards

Several Waco firefighters were honored for their years of service and dedication at the departments annual Retirement Reception on Monday.

First responder Shane Spann was given the Firefighter of the year award after saving two teens from drowning in a Sept. 28, 2013 flash flood.

Spann says he hopes the award will honor his family, friends and God.

"I'm very proud of it, but at the same time all the glory goes to God on this. He does miracles and that day he helped me perform one in saving those kids."

Paul Simmons was given the fire departments Career Achievement Award for his work planning and coordinating multiple events and activities to promote the Waco Fire Department.

Retiring civil servants Alan Blahuta, 29 years of service, and Darren Qualls, 20 years of service, were also honored at the reception.
