Killeen man found guilty of 2012 murder sentenced to life in prison

BELL COUNTY - A Bell County jury has sentenced a Killeen man to life in prison after finding him guilty of murder for shooting another man in his own apartment back in October 2012.

Cliffton Montague was found guilty of murder in the shooting death of Shawn Newsome. The jury began the sentencing phase shortly after the guilty verdict Friday afternoon, and came down with the sentence Friday night.

The trial began Tuesday with four different officers with the Killeen Police Department taking the witness stand to testify about the events surrounding that shooting.

The jury heard testimony from Montague's ex-girlfriend, Trina Ware, during the second day Montague's murder trial. She said he admitted to her that he shot Newsome shortly after the shooting happened and then left the gun with her before fleeing the scene.

On Thursday, jurors heard from several men believed to be in the apartment at the time of Newsome's death.
