Copperas Cove man found guilty of assaulting a public servant

A jury in Coryell County found 31-year-old Julius Ervin Johnson of Copperas Cove guilty of assault on a public servant after a three-day trial held in Gatesville.

Police stopped Johnson for a traffic violation on Highway 190 in Cove. They took him into custody for driving while intoxicated.

While sitting in the back of the police car, he screamed and kicked one of the back doors repeatedly. When an officer walked around the vehicle to instruct him to stop, Johnson kicked the door into him, causing injury to the officer’s arm and wrist.

The sentencing took place Wednesday, March 26. Assault on a public officer is a second degree felony with a possible punishment of up to 10 years of probation or up to 10 years in the Texas Department of Corrections.
