Local church hosts youth service for West students

WEST - A local church held a youth service for West students as the one year anniversary of the West explosion gets closer.

More than a thousand people showed up at Latham Springs for the concert Saturday night, showing support for the city of West and its youth, who are still recovering from the tragedy.

First Baptist Church of West Pastor John Crowder says West residents have come far since the blast, but says they still have a long way to go in their recovery process.

"That has become a motto for us in West. We're going to rise up beyond the tragedy. We’re not going to be defined by the disaster. We are going to overcome and rebuild," says Crowder.

About 200 West students attended the service for free, and the rest of the tickets were sold out within a week. Crowder says the number of people who turned out shows people in West that others haven’t forgotten about them and that they are here to support them.

Duck Dynasty stars were among the key speakers for the night along with Christian music bands Revere and The Digital Age.
