Baylor student catches burglar in the act, chases her down

WACO - It is the last thing one Baylor senior expected, coming home after running an errand to find someone walking out with his and his roommates belongings.

"I remember running into my car after slamming the door shut, like is this really happening," Baylor senior Michael said.

Michael did not want to release his full name because he is worried of retaliation. He says he didn't suspect the woman was a thief because she was wearing a Baylor hoodie and sweatpants. He thought she was a friend of one of his roommates, and came to borrow his guitar. Michael went inside his house and noticed his roommate's TV was missing, and that's when he got in his car and chased the suspect.

"I guess the first thing I thought when I opened up the door and saw the TV was missing way I am going to let this stuff get away when I can literally see the person driving away at that moment," Michael said.

He saw the suspect drive down 3rd Street towards La Salle and take a turn. At one point he lost track of the white Suzuki but then he made a fortunate turn and found the car. That when he was forced to drive through busy traffic to catch up to her.

"Kind of went around a car at an intersection to go through that intersection faster because if I had waited then I could have lost them," Michael said.

Michael weaved through the streets until he finally caught up to the suspect and honked her down. That is where he came face to face with 37-year-old Sheila Viewins. Michael says he did the only thing he could, which was threaten to call police.

"I have my phone ready to dial 9-1-1. Give me my stuff back and I won't call police," Michael said.

Viewins surrendered the stolen items and asked that Michael would not call the cops. Michael says he is fortunate the encounter ended peacefully and didn't take a turn for the worst.

"At the moment I really didn't think if she had a weapon or any thing like that. I was very thankful that she didn't because things could have gone down in a very different way," Michael said.

Michael was able to recover the television, but realized Viewins took a whole lot more, including two laptops, his watch, a guitar, and another TV. That's when he decided to call police. Michael says his only goal was to get his stuff back and would probably think twice before chasing down the suspect again. He knows that he got lucky being at the right place at the right time.

"Just how lucky I was to come back when I did, and take the turn on the street that I did, I mean there are so many things I was thankful for that went my way," Michael said.

Police say thanks to Michael's description of Viewins, they were able to find her and arrest her for burglary of a habitation.
