40 dogs to be euthanized at Waco shelter after being exposed to rabid dog

WACO - Forty dogs from the Waco Animal Shelter have been or will need to be euthanized after being exposed to a rabid dog.

The city says they found a stray dog in Lorena earlier this month. It was euthanized on Monday, March 17 after officials found out the dog had rabies.

Officials say 18 dogs were put down on Wednesday, March 19, and 12 more were euthanized Thursday because they were exposed to the rabid dog. Ten more will be put down Friday.

The state says the shelter had two options, either euthanize the dogs, or immediately vaccinate them, and keep them confined for 45-90 days.

The city says they weren't happy with the decision they had to make, but it needed to be done for the health and safety of the other dogs.

Those who handled the dogs are being treated, just in case.
