Ex-Normangee police chief sentenced to 2 years probation

WACO, TX (KXXV) - A former Normangee police chief has been sentenced to 2 years of probation after he pleaded guilty to abusing access to a crime database at the request of a drug trafficking suspect.

Former Normangee Police Chief Joseph Ray "Jody" Navarro, 41, pleaded guilty in federal court in January to illegally obtaining information from a law enforcement computer system. Navarro also has to enroll in a location monitoring program for five months.

The former Normangee Police Chief  admitted to accessing a crime database at the request of a drug trafficking suspect. He then ran a background check on a license plate and name of the dealer in May 2013.

The request came from Brenda Antanette Evans, a 45-year-old Normangee resident suspected of trafficking in methamphetamine.

Evans was sentenced to five years in federal prison.
