Bullish behavior leads police on wild chase after steer

WACO -

Waco police and drivers on La Salle Ave. were on high alert Tuesday afternoon after a wild bull went running up and down a busy street.

The bull was being taken care of at Jager Veterinary Clinic in the 2000 block of Circle Dr. The bull was inside a corral, when he had enough and made a run for it.

"This bull was pretty agitated. He had been at been at the vets office that had been out there behind the circle getting some vaccinations. That didn't settle well with him. He decided he wasn't going to stay there and broke out of the corral there," Waco police spokesman Patrick Swanton said.

The bull jumped over a six foot fence, and ran free. He started at Circle Drive and La Salle, and ran towards the Ferrell Center. He weaved in and out of traffic, and on to the sidewalk.

"He was free running down La Salle," Swanton said. "Our first concern is pedestrians, our next concern is traffic."

Police were able to corral the bull in a fenced in field at the corner of La Salle and 3rd street. On-lookers gazed in amazement as two cowboys were called in to rope down the steer and put him in a trailer.

Law enforcement officials say they are thankful no one was injured and nothing was damaged. Police say a scene like this is something that makes you say "only in Texas."

"The good thing about living in Texas is that not too much time before you call for a cowboy and you got one coming to you," Swanton said.

The bull was taken back to the vets office, and will stay there until his owner comes to pick him up. Police say the bull may be sold or used for breeding.
