Lap dances prohibited under proposed Waco ordinance

Some city leaders want to update Waco's strip club ordinances.  That would mean no lap dances or other physical contact at local strip clubs.

The current laws date back to the 1980's.  Proposed changes will be presented at Tuesday night's council meeting.

If passed, nude and semi-nude clubs would both be regulated.  Dancers would have to be licensed, in addition to businesses.  They'd also have to be on a stage at least six feet away from customers.

Waco City Attorney Jennifer Richie says, "We're trying to prevent those opportunities that may encourage some criminal behavior in a business and try to encourage the best operation possible."

Back in 2011, the Waco council pulled the operating license from Sonny's BYOB amid prostitution allegations.  Richie says these new proposals are not a direct result of that, but it did make them realize their ordinances need to be updated.

We were only able to reach one strip club manager for comment.  She says they are already in compliance with the proposals.
