Gatesville tax breaks encourage development

Tax breaks are helping to keep business booming in one local community.  Gatesville leaders say they're set to declare the Laerdal Medical campus a re-investment zone at Tuesday's city council meeting.

In turn, the company's planned expansion will be eligible for a tax abatement from both the City of Gatesville and Coryell County.

City Administrator Roger Mumby says, "I think it's very important.  We're a small town and really what you want in a small town is as much development as possible. And they're excited about it. Any corporate organization is going to be happy saving a few thousand dollars over ten years."

With about 200 employees, Laerdal is one of Gatesville's largest employers.  Details about the possible expansion project are not yet being released.  It isn't expected to add new jobs, but would ensure that the company stays in Gatesville.  Laerdal leaders say they do plan to hire local folks for the construction work.
