WACO - Waco Police report a man accused of strangling his girlfriend with a broom across her throat has been arrested.

Bret Terry Weaver faces charges of evading arrest with a vehicle and assault by strangulation-family violence and has been booked into the McLennan County Jail.

Police say the incident occurred at 5:20 p.m. January 31, at an apartment in the 900 block of Wooded Acres Dr. in Waco. Police say the victim had been pushed up against a wall with a broom handle across her throat. A neighbor responded as she heard the victim scream for help.

According to police, the neighbor sprayed Weaver with pepper spray as he rushed at her and tried to push her out of the apartment. Weaver then fled.

The victim was taken to a local hospital by ambulance for treatment.

Police obtained a warrant for Weaver and found him overnight Wednesday.
