Fire Hydrant Bust Leads To Hours Of Water Shortage

A busted fire hydrant left many Killeen residents in one neighborhood dealing with a big mess after a large water main break.

The city's water and sewage department was preparing to replace a fire hydrant valve when that break started.

This week, residents between 407 and 817 Cardinal Avenue were given boil water notices to let them know that the water would be shut off starting March 6 from 7 A.M. to 3 P.M. Unfortunately, an accidental bust left residents without water a day earlier than they had planned.

Those residents were also left without explanation when an emergency shut off led to hours of water shortage and clean-up, and when one resident complained to the city, she was told that the problem was being resolved when, in fact, it wasn't.

"I was specifically told that there were people on that specific corner working it, and I told them, 'I'm standing right outside looking at that corner and there's nobody there,'" Killeen resident Krista Brown said. "So, first of all, you don't seem to be attending to what I feel you need to, and then you're lying to me about it."

Along with the break came not only a water shortage, but also a possible hike in this month's bill as well.

"I called some guy and he kept saying the same thing over and over again,'Well, you know ma'am, we have protocol that we gotta this, that and the other,'" Killeen resident Catherine Collins said. "I said, 'Sir, I understand that, too, but we gotta pay this water bill that's going down the street.' I pay $50 a month for my water. I guarantee you it'll probably go up about $20-$25 with my next bill because of today."

The City of Killeen was unavailable for comment on the water issue, and they still plan to shut off the water again tomorrow morning starting at 7 A.M.
