Barricaded man in West taken into custody

WEST - A man who barricaded himself inside a home on Reagan St. in West has been taken into custody following a standoff with police Tuesday morning.

Police say the incident started at 9:20 a.m., at a home near Pine and Reagan Streets in West. The owner of the house said that another man who had been staying there was acting erratically and he wouldn't leave the house.

West police arrived and the man barricaded himself inside a bedroom of the house. Police say the man appeared to have been high on drugs and that he had a past history of drug use.

After about an hour, West police called for assistance from the McLennan County Sheriff's Officer S.W.A.T. Team. Tear gas was sent into the house about an hour later, and the man came out without further incident. Reagan St. was closed for traffic during the incident.

He was taken into custody and is being transported to Providence Health Center for evaluation. Authorities are not releasing the name of the man until after the evaluation.
