Winter weather wreaks havoc on drivers and responding officers

Winter weather wrecked havoc on drivers causing backups all day Sunday because of dangerous road conditions.

The freezing rain and sleet caused the roads to ice-over creating dangerous driving conditions causing traffic near the I-35 and highway 6 exchange to be backed up for miles.TxDOT crews had to re-sand some roads and bridges they treated earlier.

Hewitt police shut down the Sun Valley Road flyover on i-35 earlier Sunday because of the deteriorating road conditions and several police departments warned drivers to stay home.

Waco Police Department says they reported 44 accidents like the one earlier today on Highway 84 near Axtell. At one point, calls were coming in so fast they couldn't handle them all at once.

DPS says they responded to dozens of minor accidents, up and down the interstate and many overpasses. DPS says because it's cold out here, the icy road conditions aren't going away and they expect them to last throughout the night and into the morning.
