Father of teen in coma hopeful his son will wake up

A McGregor teen is in a Fort Worth hospital in a coma and his father says they're hopeful Blake Hyland will wake up soon.

14 year old Blake Hyland has been in a coma for ten days after hitting his head in a gymnastics accident. He was transferred to the Cook Children's Medical Center in Forth Worth after the February 18 accident. His family has been with him every day since then.

"Blake continually amazes us with how big of a fighter he is and how strong he is. There's literally dozens of fights he's had to go through on any given day," Blake's father Pat Hyland said over the phone Friday from the hospital.

Pat says doctors are gradually taking him Blake off a ventilator. He says within the next 18 hours, Blake could wake up.

"We expect him to open his eyes and we're looking forward to another miracle in a long line of them that's happened up to this point," Pat said.

Pat says they've seen support from around Waco, Texas, the nation and even around the world. He says he doesn't know how they could have gone through this without that support.

"You can imagine as a parent this has been incredibly stressful and scary and as you go through this with one of your children," Pat said. "It helps us and it comforts us knowing that there's other people out there that are praying for Blake and at each one of these stages and each one of these breakthroughs we're looking for, we're leaning heavily upon these people now."

Thousands of people like the "Prayers for Blake Hyland" Facebook page. You can see friends showing tattoos in support and a gymnastics team from Kentucky also sending their well wishes.

Pat Hyland says there is still a long road ahead for Blake and he could be in the hospital for the next six months. However, he says he's grateful and thanked everyone for the support they've received.

He says they'll stay by Blake's side until he opens his eyes.
