HOUSTON (AP) - A Canadian man awaiting possible deportation because of charges against him in his home country has died in federal custody.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Tuesday 46-year-old Peter George Rockwell's family authorized his removal from life support after Rockwell suffered a heart attack or stroke Feb. 15. He was declared dead Saturday at a Houston-area hospital.
Records show he'd been in the U.S. since 1993 as a legal permanent resident. He was sentenced to three years community service last summer after convicted of two counts of felony evading arrest. Immigration officials say Canadian authorities said he was wanted by Ontario, Provincial Police on charges that included fraud and forged documents. Ottawa police also wanted him for charges including spousal assault.
He'd been in U.S. custody since Jan. 30.
