Historic home burns to ground, no injuries

Posted:
MCGREGOR - A historic home in McGregor took a loss on Monday night after it caught on fire.

The two-story home was known as the "Brown-Mann House." Located on 6th Street and South Jackson, the home was vacant, McGregor Mayor Jimmy Hering said. Neighboring homes also suffered minor damage including city councilman Paul Allison's home, Hering said.

Allison's son spotted smoke coming from the vacant home around 6:30 p.m.

Ten fire departments responded to the fire.

"Our fire chief said they were coming in so quick, that they couldn't even report them coming in. People just rushed in," said Hering. "One of the good things that came out of something like this, is when you see the surrounding communities helping out because we needed help."

There were no injuries. The fire marshal will be investigating the cause of the fire.
