Police: Man robs area store to get drug money

MCLENNAN COUNTY, TX (KXXV) - A 58-year-old McLennan County man is being held on a robbery charge after telling officers he robbed an area store because he needed money for heroin.

Michael Odell Thorndyke has been charged with robbery and evading arrest for an incident Friday, Feb. 21. He is being held without bond on a parole violation.

Bellmead police were called to a Walmart store Friday afternoon after receiving a report that a man was pushing a cart loaded with stolen tools and car batteries out of the store.

Officers arrived on the scene and found a man, later identified as Thorndyke, fighting with a loss prevention officer who tried to stop him. Police say the officer received an injured back and several cuts as a result.

Police say Thorndyke fled as officers arrived. Officers asked him to stop several times, but he refused. Officers then used a Taser to bring the man down.

According to police, Thorndyke continued to fight with officers. He pulled the Taser probes out, so officers used the Taser again, which brought him under control.

Thorndyke told officers he was so heavily dependent on heroin that he had to find ways to get money to get more heroin.
