AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has called for an investigation into the voter registration methods of Democratic group Battleground Texas.
The Republican official said Friday that the attorney general's office should determine if Battleground Texas has violated any laws in how it registers voters and signs up supporters.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is running for governor against Democrat Wendy Davis, who Battleground Texas is assisting.
Dewhurst called for the probe after a conservative activist group produced a video that appeared to show Battleground Texas organizers saying they were collecting phone numbers from voter registration forms they collected.
Texas law allows party activists to register voters, but bans them from transcribing phone numbers from official state forms.
A spokesman for Battleground Texas did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
