Cameron officer injured during early morning incident

Posted:
CAMERON - A Cameron officer was injured early Friday morning during an incident in which the 37-year-old suspect is accused of trying to take the officer's weapon.

Verdell R. Wells, of Cameron, is currently in the Milam County Jail, charged with resisting arrest, assaulting a public servant, impersonating a peace officer, and attempting to take a weapon from a peace officer.

Police say the Cameron police officer was investigating a suspicious person about 1:15 a.m., near the intersection of 8th and Martin Luther King Dr. in Cameron.

The man, later identified as Wells, claimed he was a police officer and he was doing his job in the area as the officer tried to take him into custody. Police say Wells also began fighting with the officer and tried to take the officer's weapon.

The officer called for help from a nearby group of people gathered in the area, but no one would help. Units from the Milam County Sheriff’s Office and Cameron Police came to assist with the arrest.

The injured officer was taken to Scott & White and has since been released, but police say he will have follow up treatments in the future.
