Lockdown of Gatesville ISD schools lifted after shooting incident near Gatesville

GATESVILLE - Gatesville ISD schools were put on lockdown for a short time Wednesday morning after a shooting incident near Gatesville turned into a standoff with authorities, in which police say the suspect took his own life.

According to Gatesville Police Chief Nathan Gohlke, a shooting incident occurred just west of Gatesville, in the Arnett community, Wednesday morning. The Coryell County Sheriff's Office got a call at 9:12 a.m. Wednesday morning, from Amber Suggs, who said she lived in the 700 block of FM 930, near the community of Arnett, and had been shot.

Deputies searched the property after arriving on the scene, but did not find the shooter. Suggs told deputies that she had been shot by Franklin Wayne Ingram, of Gatesville, and that he may be headed to a home near Flat in a red Jeep Wrangler. Authorities say Suggs' injuries did not appear to be life threatening.

Gatesville PD was contacted and investigators requested schools be put on lockdown as a precautionary measure.

According to the Coryell County Sheriff's Office, an investigator with the sheriff's office was driving to Flat, and saw the suspect's vehicle coming into Ft. Gates from the south. The investigator attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver turned onto Gateway Circle and then pulled in behind a business near Gateway Circle and Highway 36.

The investigator called for back-up and got out of his vehicle. The suspect also got out of his vehicle and had a shotgun. Gatesville police arrived on the scene to assist.

The sheriff's office investigator asked the suspect to drop his weapon several times. Authorities say the man then turned the shotgun on himself and fired.

Authorities are still investigating the reason for the shooting. The Texas Rangers and Gatesville PD are assisting the Coryell County Sheriff's Office with the investigation.
