Food Stamp Use On The Rise For Military Families

Posted:
WASHINGTON D.C. -

According to a new report, more and more military families are relying on food stamps to provide for their families thanks largely in part to unemployment among military spouses.

The report also says that the weak economic recovery is to blame for those families relying on government assistance.

Food stamp redemption at military commissaries has been on the rise since the beginning of the recession back in 2008, and, as of last year, nearly $104 million worth of food stamps have been redeemed just so that many military families can simply buy their groceries.

According to the new report done by the Military Officers Association of America, as of 2012, the unemployment rate among military spouses climbed to roughly 30%, and many military spouses have a hard time finding employment after numerous relocations and duty station moves. The report says that's causing more and more military families to fall back on food stamps for help.

Back in November, Congress allowed for some cuts in the food stamp program with the average recipient losing about $11.00, and many active duty military service members and their families were affected by those cuts.
