Family friend helps elderly woman escape Belton house fire

BELTON - An 84-year-old woman got some help from a family friend getting out of her house of 60 years that caught fire Thursday morning.

Belton Fire Chief Francisco Corona says a call came in just before 8:30 a.m. about a house fire in the 400 block S. East St., near downtown Belton.

Flames were visible when first units arrived on the scene. Fire Chief Corona says firefighters battled the fire for about 30 minutes.

An 84-year-old woman had lived in the house for 60 years. Two people were inside the home at the time of the fire, the 84-year-old homeowner and a family friend. Everyone was able to get out of the house safely, including a dog.

Firefighters say the home suffered major damage inside. The bedroom and bathroom only had smoke damage.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but they believe it started in the back of the home.
