Number of Texas students taking and passing AP exams on the rise

The number of Texas students taking and passing Advance Placement classes is on the rise.

Tuesday the number of high school students taking and passing advance placement courses in Texas has nearly doubled in the past decade. Even though the numbers have increased, we're still below the national average.

The College Board, which oversees AP programs, released their 10th annual AP report to the nation which ranks each state by the number of students taking AP classes. This year, Texas came in at 19th in the country.

The report compares numbers from 2013 with those from 2003.

Last year 18.5% of the graduating class passed at least one AP exam, that's up from just 12%, ten years ago but still under the national average of 20.1%.

Temple is above the national average. Last year, more than 24% of the graduating seniors passed the exam.

Belton ISD has seen an increase in the number of their students taking AP classes. Thanks to the expansion of AP courses at new tech high school, there are nearly 150 more advanced placement students this year than last.  That's up more than 2% from last year, from 16.3% to 18.8% of students.

Belton ISD's Assistant Superintendent says he thinks the push is coming from students and parents.

"They realize college is going to be expensive and they'd like to get college hours and they want to do everything they can to be as prepared as possible when they go."

Overall, nearly 36% of high school grads took at least one advance placement exam.

The report also shows that of those, the number of low-income students in these classes has more than doubled over the years. Last year, low income students accounted for nearly 43% of all grads who passed the AP exam.

According to the Texas Education Agency, students who take AP classes are more likely than their peers to graduate college in four years.

The Report to the Nation is released to help educators set goals and get more students involved in advance placement courses.
