House To Vote On Reinstating Military Retiree Pension Benefits

Posted:
WASHINGTON D.C. -

Hundreds of thousands of military retirees are anxiously awaiting votes on bills to restore their pensions.

The House is expected to vote on a measure to trim cuts made to military pension benefits after Congress made a deal back in December to fund the federal government and trim cost-of-living raises for military retirees starting in 2015.

The move would save the government more than $6 billion, but it also means that around 750,000 retirees would see their pensions reduced in the process, and according to a recent report released this month by a congressional research service, enlisted members will lose an average of $69,000 dollars over their lifetime.

Lawmakers on both sides generally agree that they want to help military retirees, but what they can't seem to agree on is how to pay for reinstating those increases.

The Senate could take a vote on the measure as early as Wednesday.
