Police investigate victims losing thousands of dollars to dating site scammers

WACO - Waco police are investigating dating website scammers after victims have reported losing thousands of dollars by falling for scammers on dating sites.

Waco PD has received three cases of victims falling for scammers on dating sites since November 2013. Police say typical cases involve promises of marriage and then the scammers get money from victims through wire transfers overseas.

In the cases that have been reported to Waco PD, women have started an online relationship with someone, who they thought was a businessman. The victims have lost, $3,000, $5,000 and $15,000 to scammers, and have used Match.com, Zoosk.com and Christianmingle.com, in the cases reported to police.

The scammers would set up believable profiles and were able to convince the victims to wire money to them for business adventures. The relationship usually goes on for several months and the victims become comfortable and believe the promises they are told.

The chances of finding the scammer or getting the money back after it has been transferred, are very small. Police say the transfers have been wired to overseas accounts and are typically closed right after the money is withdrawn.

Police warn residents to be careful when using dating websites and stress the importance of safety when dealing with these types of sites. Police say the potential for things to go wrong when sending money to someone you don't know is great, and the chances of getting your money back or police arresting the suspect are low.
