A new attitude for West LTRC in their new building

WEST -

It's a fresh start for West Long Term Recovery in their new building.

The center had an open house for their new location on Oak Street in West on Friday. They're now in a new year, in a new building and have a new director.

Suzanne Hack took over for Karen Bernsen as the LTRC director. She says the community has a different outlook going into the second month of the new year.

"Up until this point, we have been dealing with the disaster, everybody's been in the midst of chaos and now there's a brand new phase, a brand new attitude throughout the community. We are clearly in a rebuilding phase and that requires a different response," Hack said.

Hack says their new facility offers a lot more room. One part of the building has offices so residents can speak privately with case managers. Another part has donated goods with items ranging from furniture to toiletries.

Hack also brought in Father Boniface from St. Mary's Church of the Assumption in West to bless the new facility. In a 15 minute prayer service he blessed the building and Hack. He also spread holy water throughout the building.

The center moved in January because the city owns the property they were in. It is illegal for a 501-C3 to be in city owned property.

Residents have previously been frustrated with the LTRC after most of the donated funds have not been distributed. One woman says the new building doesn't really change the opinions of some residents because they've stopped trying to work with them. Another women says she hopes with the new year this will be a new start.

Hack says they have now approved $1.1 million of the $3.7 million in donated funds for residents.
