15 month sentence given to area man for bank fraud

WACO, TX (KXXV) - An area man was sentenced to 15 months in prison after admitting he committed bank fraud at a Bell County bank.

James Jamel Alston was sentenced to 15 months in federal prison, followed by 3 years supervised release and was ordered to pay $21,676 in restitution.

According to the factual basis, Alston deposited worthless checks at an ATM for his USAA Federal Savings Bank checking account. He would then make purchases and withdraw money from the checking account before USAA Federal Savings Bank was able to determine the deposited checks were worthless.

The factual basis says this started in January 2013, when Alston deposited four worthless checks worth more than $2,800 into his account at USAA Federal Savings Bank in Killeen. He then made purchases and withdrew money from his account.

In August 2013, Alston provided a statement and admitted to the bank fraud, according to the factual basis. He also admitted to knowing that the checks he deposited were worthless.
