Overnight fatal fire in Salado

SALADO - A 30-year-old man is dead after flames engulfed a Salado house late Wednesday night.

The first call came in just before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night of a house fire in the 11000 block of Irene Lane in Salado. The fire was in a two story house that was home to two families. The house was engulfed in flames when first firefighters arrived.

A neighbor saw smoke coming from the home and called 911. Residents upstairs also smelled smoke and woke up others.

30-year-old Alejandro Torres Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. Bell County Fire Marshal Steve Casey says Torres was found in his room. The fire was believed to have started in that room.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Torres' body has been sent to the Southwest Institute for Forensic Science for an autopsy.

One family is staying with relatives, who live nearby. The second family is being assisted by the Red Cross. There were no smoke detectors in the home.
