BELTON, TX (KXXV) - A 96-year-old Belton woman was honored with the Yellow Rose of Texas Award on Thursday.

Senator Troy Fraser presented Berneta Peeples with the Yellow Rose of Texas Award, created by Governor Allan Shivers in 1957 to honor women who have demonstrated outstanding volunteer and community service.

Peeples has been a reporter for The Belton Journal since her senior year of high school in 1937. She accepted the award at the newspaper's office with friends and colleagues.

"I'm honored to be here today to present this award to a true legend of journalism," said Sen. Fraser. "Ms. Peeples' career is a reflection of her hard work and dedication to bringing the news to the citizens of central Texas in her unique way."

Peeples is considered the unofficial historian as her career has spanned nearly eight decades. She still writes one feature per week for the paper.
