Recently, the Temple Police Department has seen a rise in thefts of copper from homes under construction in the city. As a result, investigators from the Temple Police Department's General Investigations Unit started to conduct late night surveillance in various construction and developing areas in the city.

Around 1:30 a.m. on January 29th, 2014, one position reported two suspects had entered a home under construction in the 1700 block of Deerfield Drive. Officers converged on the area and waited for the suspects to leave the home. When they came out, they were immediately detained by officers.

The suspects were identified as 31 year old Michael Allen Perez of Temple and 26 year old Alexis Marie Ireland of Temple. Both were found in possession of gloves and flashlights. Officers also found a pair of wire cutters on the ground nearby.

Investigators went inside the home to check for damage and found that several wires had been cut and attempts had been made to remove the wiring. However, due to the installation method of the particular wires they could not be pulled from the house, and the suspects were forced to leave the wiring behind.

The case was reviewed by the Bell County District Attorney Office on January 29th, and a complaint was issued by that office charging Mr. Perez and Ms. Ireland with burglary of a building.
