Inmate Dies in Custody of Sheriff's Office

BELL COUNTY - On Tuesday, January 28th, Temple Police arrested a man for possession of marijuana. He was booked into the Bell County jail shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and listed his home address as Mobile, Alabama.

The man had been in the Bell County jail a number of times so the jail staff was aware of his medical condition and substance abuse history. He was put under medical observation in the Jail's Infirmary.

Just after 6 a.m. Wednesday morning, the man started complaining to the medical staff that he was sick. Shortly after that, he collapsed on the floor. Medical Staff started CPR and the Belton Fire Department dispatched an ambulance. When Belton EMS arrived on scene, they continued CPR. After a Belton Paramedic gave the man's medical information to Scott and White Emergency Room, doctors told him to stop CPR.

Steven David Evans, 60, was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m. by Judge Don Engleking. Judge Engleking ordered that the body be sent to the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas for an autopsy.

The Bell County Sheriff's Office is investigating this incident. Alabama State Troopers located Evans next of kin and made notification of his death. Evans was living in the Temple area at the time of his arrest.
