Sen. Cornyn Calls For Reform to Military Voting

Posted:
WASHINGTON D.C. -

Texas senator John Cornyn has introduced a bill aimed at improving military voting.

Cornyn testified before the Senate Rules Committee about what he has named the Sentri Act. He said that the goal of this new legislation is to end the disenfranchisement of military voters and their families by streamlining the voting process both here and overseas.

He also said that the bill would ensure that errors or delays in ballot distribution could be corrected, and that they could be fixed in time for service members and civilians living overseas to vote.

"The 2012 election made clear that there are too many barriers to military service members and their families voting and having their votes actually counted, and that we need to do more," Cornyn said.

New York democratic senator Charles Schumer cosigned on the bill in an effort to show bipartisan support for the issue.

The Sentri Act will also require that the Department of Defense reform its on-base voter assistance program, and the goal of that reform is to ensure that troops and their families receive the same level of voting assistance under the National Voter Registration Act.

Both Cornyn and Schumer said that they hoped to offer the new legislation as an amendment to the 2014 National Defense Authorization Act.
