Construction worker killed in accident at Baylor University identified

The body of a construction worker who was recovered late Tuesday evening from the Brazos River has been identified.

The man has been identified as 55-year-old Jose Dario Suarez from Manor, Texas. Suarez's body has been sent for an autopsy. Suarez and another man were working on a pedestrian bridge under construction that's planned to go over the river to the new stadium. The two men were on a construction boom that toppled into the water. The incident happened shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. Waco Police responded to the call.

Police are not sure what went wrong, but one of the men was still attached to the boom when it went under and the other man was able to survive the accident. The boom was still underwater as of Wednesday night. It could be taken out later in the week.

Police aren't sure if the wind could have caused the boom to fall in the water. The man who swam out of the water was taken to Providence Health Center in Waco for treatment of hypothermia and later released. The Morgan's Point Dive Team from Belton was called in to search for the missing worker.

The Brazos River is around 15-20 feet deep depending where you are. Rescuer's were able to recover the body shortly after 8 p.m. Justice of the Peace Judge DeCluitt pronounced the man dead at 8:18 p.m.

Authorities are calling the incident a "construction accident." OSHA is investigating the accident. It's unclear how the boom fell off the barge in the middle of the river.
