Killeen veterans cemetery get $5 million grant for upgrades

KILLEEN - The Department of Veterans Affairs is awarding a nearly $5 million grant for expansion and upgrades to the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.

The cemetery is for military personnel and their families and will be getting a $4,948,832 grant for upgrades in an expansion project starting in February.

The Texas General Land Office announced renovation plans for the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery back in December.

The grant will pay for 4,000 burial crypts, building a headstone grid support system, support infrastructure, landscaping and improvements.

“My district is made up of thousands of brave men and women who have selflessly served this great country. This is why I have fought and will continue to fight tooth and nail to make sure our soldiers and veterans receive funds needed for this beautiful cemetery,” said Congressman John Carter. “Through this grant, our veterans will continue receiving our love, respect and support through the much-needed projects this grant will help fund.” Carter is also Vice-Chairman of Military Construction and Veterans Affairs.

The cemetery opened in 2006 and has more than 7,000 plots. The land previously was part of Fort Hood and donated by the federal government.
