High speed rail proposed to come through Central Texas

Posted:
WACO - A high speed rail from Oklahoma City to San Antonio is in the works, and a few proposed routes shows the rail running through Central Texas.

A public meeting was held on Monday night to give opinion and input on the rail. A federally funded study was conducted, and it showed that I-35 is becoming a congested highway and will more than likely continue to be congested with Texas' growing population.

On average, 1,000 people move to Texas every day. Which raised questions on another option for transportation. The high speed rail will go from Oklahoma City, through Dallas, Central Texas and Austin ending at San Antonio. In addition, there is another separate study for a high speed rail that will go from San Antonio to Monterrey, Mexico.

There were many factors that were carefully looked at in the study. Including natural resources, cultural and recreational resources, meaning farmland, schools and homes. Another from of transportation means growth in the local economy.

"It's a boom to the economy and to the stand point of jobs to the stand point of commercial and retail development, residential impacts as far as growth of a particular area that may not have been there," Txdot spokesman Ken Roberts said.

People at the meeting voiced their concerns on train stop locations or where the rail will be located. Txdot will also hear from the public in Austin, Taylor and San Marcos.

Txdot is still taking public comments and opinion. You can visit www.txokrail-event.org.
