Report: Crime numbers down in Killeen last year

KILLEEN - According to the 2013 Uniform Crime Report put out by the Killeen Police Department, violent and non-violent crimes, as well as the overall crime index, went down in Killeen from the 2012 numbers.

Killeen PD released Part I of its 2013 Uniform Crime Report for violent and non-violent crimes. According to the report, violent crimes went down more than 11%. Aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery are the crimes considered violent crime. Non-violent crimes consist of burglary, larceny and vehicle thefts, and the report shows non-violent crimes dropped almost 4%.

According to the report, the only crime category that went up last year was vehicle theft, which rose more than 7% in 2013. The report shows the overall crime index, which includes both violent and non-violent crimes, dropped 5%. This report only released the number of crimes reported. Crime rates will be released after 2013 population estimates for Killeen have been put out.

“During 2013, Killeen experienced a significant decline in murders and robberies compared to 2012.  Moreover, there were reductions in six of the seven UCR categories, which clearly show Killeen is on the right path in becoming a safer city," Chief Dennis Baldwin said. "The community’s commitment and effort to combat crime continue to provide positive results.”
