TXDOT worked to the bone amid winter caused accidents

Crews were out all night as winter weather causes multiple accidents all across Bell County.

Texas Department of Transportation officials say it was like a line was drawn at Lorena and all the ice and accidents were south of it. Accidents splattered I-35 causing massive delays throughout Friday morning. Temple saw 11 accidents between 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday afternoon and Killeen had 34 accidents overnight.

There were so many accidents in the southern part of the TXDOT region, they had to bring in crews from surrounding counties to help out. Most of them rushed to sand and de-ice roads and bridges to prevent more accidents.

TXDOT spokesperson Jodi Wheatley says she had three calls around nine Thursday night. Then crews were out the rest of the night.

"We're working as fast as we can to get the roads cleared. The guys have been working all night long. And I know it's been a hassle for drivers to deal with but there really isn't more we could've done," Wheatley said.

Wheatley says at one point cars were backed up 19 miles on I-35 which is the longest she's ever seen.

Traffic wasn't entirely cleared until around noon Friday. If you ever want to see traffic conditions you can look at TXDOT cameras by clicking here. You can also look at our Extra Co Eagle Eye Network by clicking here.
