Waco Transit to launch GPS tracking app

WACO - The new phone app could also bring some peace of mind to parents whose kids ride the bus.

Waco Transit Systems spokeswoman Erin Venable says she thinks the launch will take public transportation and Waco to the next level.

"I feel like this is a game changer for public transportation because now you wonder is the bus coming and you're standing on the corner, [wondering] have I missed it. Am I too early? Am I too late? Now you're able to look at your smartphone and track the bus in real time," said Venable.

Thanks to the new RideSystems app, riders have access to that information at their fingertips. The app is free and is offered for both androids and I-phones.  It shows a map of where every bus is, has a list of routes, and up-to-the-minute time estimates.

Waco Transit rider Benjamin Martin says he thinks the app is an excellent idea.

"You can adjust your schedule to where you don't have to be in a hurry anymore if you're using public transportation," says Martin. "Any city that has public cit that has transportation, I don't care if it's a large city or metropolitan area or a small city like Waco you have to keep up with the times."

WTS buses can also be tracked online or at select locations, by texting a number to find out when your bus will arrive. That's important information for parents of WISD students who are riding Waco Transit buses.

"It's good as far as reliability... But then also, especially because we're offering free rides to Waco ISD students we feel like it's a safety element. If you've got a 14 year-old out on a street corner and you're wondering are they safe. Is the bus coming in 20 minutes or 10? Now you can look on your phone and say ok the bus is going to be here in five minutes go on out to the corner.

Waco transit is the only public transportation system in our area to offer GPS tracking of their fleet, taking the guesswork out of riding the bus.

WTS originally started the idea in 2012 by offering an app to Baylor students to track the Baylor shuttles. The success of that, lead them to expand the program to the public.

The official ribbon cutting to launch the RideSystems app is Thursday at the Waco Transit bus terminal on 8th street.
